The Rose of Lilith - Soulless Single Review

Concise Summary:

The Rose of Lilith is a little-known band from the United States, and Soulless is their second single, their first being from 2015. Soulless is an interesting song from multiple standpoints, the first of which is vocally. With names like Lance King (formerly of Pyramaze), Ralf Scheepers (of Primal Fear), Mikel Johnston (of Heretical Lacerations), and Andi Kravljaca (of Aeon Zen), there are a wide variety of vocal styles on Soulless, all of which are very well-done. However, I think that the vocals should have been separated more. As it is, Mikel Johnston seems to do most of the singing, and when the other three come in, at least two are generally singing in harmony, which drowns out their individual voices. The harmony is OK, but I think it would have been better to have a two-person stereo harmony (instead of being mono like it is). Basically I think that, for example, Lance and Ralf should have done a harmony with Lance balanced left and Ralf balanced right. That would have added to the depth of the song and may have improved the sound of the harmony as well. Apart from the vocals, the instrumentals on Soulless are pretty solid. Whoever did the symphonic side of this song killed it! The guitar is not super technical, but since the focus of the song seems to be more on the vocals, that makes sense. I thought that one of the riffs got a little too repetitive, but that's a minor complaint. Overall, Soulless is an impressive single from The Rose of Lilith, especially considering it's only their second, and I think that their first EP is going to be very impressive!

My Rating: 8 out of 10

Highlights:
  • Wide range of vocal talents
  • Awesome symphonic instrumentation
  • Guitar parts fit well with the song
  • This song does an amazing job of being heavy without getting muddy. The dark-sounding organ that comes in around 4:00 is a great example of that.
Lowlights:
  • Vocal harmonies could have been a bit better in my opinion
  • I would have liked to see more single-vocalist parts with a more even distribution of singing time among the four vocalists on the track. That being said, I don't think the song is bad like it is, it just might draw more attention of each vocalist's part were more poignant.
